TSK and SSP Announce Deputy Editor Position 

The Scholarly Kitchen (TSK) and the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) are seeking applicants for the volunteer role of Deputy Editor for The Scholarly Kitchen. The Deputy Editor will provide continuity of service when the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) is unavailable, support the EIC editorially as needed, and assist with managing TSK contributors, content, and brand maintenance. This role requires a commitment of up to 5 hours per week, and candidates must have their employer’s support to serve in this capacity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage for the EIC in their absence to maintain TSK postings without interruption
  • Screen and copy-edit submitted guest posts and other posts as assigned
  • Provide constructive feedback to writers to enhance post quality.
  • Revise headlines if necessary
  • Help maintain the professional tone of the site
  • Collaborate with the EIC to brainstorm and develop new content ideas.
  • Recruit and work with Chefs to find guest contributors and interview subjects
  • Help to coordinate TSK/Chefs’ webinars/panels, including suggesting topics and defining the content
  • Assist the EIC to maintain and update TSK’s social media presence
  • Monitor blog performance and analyze metrics to improve engagement.
  • Participate in TSK events, Kitchen Cabinet meetings, and other SSP meetings as needed

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience in scholarly communication, showcasing excellent written and verbal skills. They will possess strong editorial abilities and attention to detail and be capable of working collaboratively with a diverse team of contributors. The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Proficiency in managing multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong written communication skills suited for a range of audiences; a writing sample is requested.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and basic HTML
  • Knowledge of The Scholarly Kitchen and/or the Society for Scholarly Publishing (preferred)
  • Regular attendance and participation in scholarly meetings and conferences (preferred)
  • Candidates must have the support of their employer (if applicable)

A small stipend is available. This is a newly created position, and responsibilities may be adjusted over time at the discretion of SSP and the EIC of The Scholarly Kitchen. Finalists will be notified by the end of January and invited to complete a series of written responses.
