Senior Editor Engagement Manager, American Chemical Society

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, and what did you study? Where are you currently based?

I live in Washington, DC, and have been here for almost two years! I’m originally from Raleigh, NC. I began my scholarly publishing career as an Editorial Assistant with J&J Editorial (thanks, Craigslist!). I attended Duke University, where I received a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies. While at Duke, I took a two-week summer course at the University of Oxford. This once-in-a-lifetime experience ignited me to leave my comfort zone of NC and explore new opportunities. I fulfilled my goal of becoming a real estate agent before rejoining the scholarly publishing community.

Describe your current role and organization. What are your main responsibilities? What type of organization do you work for?

I’m a Senior Editor Engagement Manager for the American Chemical Society. I manage the ACS Editor Hub, a specialized site designed specifically for our editors. I also explore ways to increase editor engagement through new and existing products. I recently launched a quarterly newsletter for our editors. I’m proud to bring to life an idea that was pitched before I started at the ACS.

In your experience, what skills or qualities are essential for success in scholarly communications?

Patience- projects can move slow! To keep things on track, effective communication along with strategic follow-ups is essential. Also, acknowledge projects that may be on someone’s plate in your follow-up. I believe stakeholders respond sooner because they know you’re coming from a place of understanding.

What do you wish you knew more about in your field?

AI! I feel like I missed the beginning stages of an extremely important conversation. I wish there were an AI 101 session at conferences in addition to those wanting to learn more about specific tools.

What advice would you give to aspiring professionals in scholarly communications?

If you find yourself in an environment that isn’t good for your mental health, leave sooner rather than later. There are so many opportunities to learn from kind and smart industry leaders. My first role led to me obtaining a master’s degree from Duke! Thanks to my current role, I received a Certificate in Product Management from Stanford University. These accomplishments were never on my radar before crossing paths with women whose careers I admire. Be grateful for the rooms that pour positivity into you and allow room for growth.
