DataSeer and Lupus Research Alliance Partner to Support Open Science and Drive Research Progress

DataSeer and the Lupus Research Alliance are proud to announce a new partnership designed to advance data and resource sharing to accelerate progress toward new treatments.

The Lupus Research Alliance is the largest private, non-profit funder of lupus research in the world, driving discovery and development of next–generation lupus treatments through research and collaboration. DataSeer is a leading provider of AI solutions for funders, publishers, and institutions that streamline and support open science best practice. Now, the two organizations are joining forces to surface new business intelligence on lupus research practices — information the Lupus Research Alliance can then use to better leverage existing data, increase transparency, reproducibility and efficiency, and ultimately accelerate scientific progress.

Lupus Research Alliance policy endorses and requires sharing research data within the legal and ethical parameters, while respecting patients’ rights to privacy. The organization also requires the sharing of research resources, software, and code. Those policies are designed to maximize the impact of each grant dollar and support high-quality research.

DataSeer’s Open Science Metrics AI-technology will scan the full text of research articles produced by the Lupus Research Alliance’s portfolio of grantees over the past 6 years and return both aggregate and article-level data on data availability, methods, and code sharing. The Lupus Research Alliance will gain a deep understanding of open science practices, which it can leverage in support of strategy and policy development, and research outcomes monitoring. In the future, Open Science Metrics may also help the organization investigate data reuse and measure impact.

Maya Bader, PhD, Director of Scientific Research at the Lupus Research Alliance, underscored the organization’s dedication to open science, “The Lupus Research Alliance is committed to furthering our work by supporting the data sharing and reuse of LRA-funded research, ensuring that every dollar invested by the organization is maximized to its fullest potential for the benefit of everyone in the lupus community. This collaboration with DataSeer will establish a baseline of open science practices within our community from which we can build upon and learn from, and to provide both resources and targeted support to lupus scientists.”

“Data and methods sharing improves reproducibility and trust in research and facilitates innovation,” said Tim Vines, CEO and founder of DataSeer. “But until the advances in AI and LLM technology of the past few years, it hasn’t been possible to identify or measure desirable open science behaviors in scholarly communications accurately, or at scale. With this information in hand, publishers and funders like the Lupus Research Alliance can see for the first time the impact of their policies, and understand where improvement may be needed, and how to direct their resources.”

The partnership with DataSeer will add valuable new levers to the Lupus Research Alliance toolkit, enhancing the organization’s ability to advance its mission and improve the lives of individuals with lupus.
