Navigating Publication Ethics: A Guide for the Editorial Office

Ethical issues in scholarly publishing are a growing concern, and editorial offices are often the first to encounter them. Knowing how to spot these issues and respond to them is essential. 

This virtual session will cover the following: 

  • Overview: Ethical issues that can arise and what to look for
  • Response Guidelines: Example scenarios, COPE flowcharts, first steps, communication with key parties
  • Correcting the Literature: Options available
  • Authorship Issues
  • AI Guidelines: Setting policies, detecting breaches

Speakers: 

Patricia Baskin, Deputy Chief, Publications, American Academy of Neurology
Patricia (Patty) Baskin is Deputy Chief, Publications at the American Academy of Neurology, where she oversees publication of the six Neurology® journals, along with the CME journal and professional news tabloid. She is a past president of CSE and a former EIC of Science Editor, has taught in multiple CSE Short Courses (publication management, publication ethics, editor best practices, and DEIA and established editors’ course in Brazil and South Korea), serves on several CSE and SSP committees including the Training Committee and the DEIA committee, and is a frequent presenter at publishing conferences. She has received numerous awards, including the 2024 CSE Award for Meritorious Achievement. She represents the Council of Science Editors as a founding member and was the 2025-2026 convener of the Coalition for Diversity in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC).

Christina Bennett, Editorial Director and Publisher, American Chemical Society
Christina Bennett, PhD is an Editorial Director and Publisher at ACS Publications. She helps lead the strategy and editorial management of the American Chemical Society’s 90+ journals. Before joining ACS, she served as the Publications Director of Policy in the Publications Division at the American Physiological Society. In that role, she was responsible for analyzing and addressing the ethics concerns that arose in their journals and provided guidance on best practice in publication ethics and policy. She received her PhD in Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan and her BS in Biochemistry/Minor in Bioethics at the University of Virginia. Christina serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Council of Science Editors.

Susan Garfinkel, Trustee, COPE
Dr. Susan Garfinkel is the owner of Research Integrity Partners, supporting institutions and Research Integrity Officers in research misconduct and integrity issues, as well as assisting editors and publishers with challenges in publication ethics. She is also a COPE Board of Trustee member and Chair for COPE’s University & Research Institute subcommittee. Formerly, she was the Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at The Ohio State University, and she served as the Director for the Division of Investigative Oversight at the U.S. Office of Research Integrity. Dr. Garfinkel also was Director of Research Grants for a non-profit organization; Program Officer at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, NIH; faculty for conferences to train State and Federal court judges on molecular biology technologies; and a founding member of the Asian Pacific Rim Research Integrity network (APRI).

Daniel T. Kulp, Director of Publications, American Urological Association
Dan Kulp is the Director of Publications and Executive Editor for the American Urological Association, the founder of PIE (Publication Integrity & Ethics) Consulting, LLC, and currently Secretary for COPE. He has been in scholarly publishing for nearly three decades. Dan started in 1996 as a professional full-time editor for Physical Review B, published by the American Physical Society, and eventually advanced to the position of Editorial Director for the entire Physical Review portfolio. In 2020, he joined the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) as Editorial Director and his most recent role with ACS was Senior Director, Research Integrity & Global Developments. Dan has been involved in all aspects of publishing including peer review, publication ethics, production, distribution, and personnel and financial management of journals.

Duncan MacRae, Director Research Integrity, KGL
Duncan MacRae is Director, Research Integrity at KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd (KGL), where he develops research integrity strategies and translates them into practical products, services, and workflows for scholarly publishers. He leads the teams responsible for delivering and supporting these solutions, which address plagiarism, paper-mill activity, authorship verification, data validation, and other risks across publisher portfolios. Duncan works closely with publishers, editors, and internal specialists to identify emerging integrity challenges, design effective responses, and integrate them into editorial and production processes. He also advises clients on complex integrity concerns and best-practice policies, helping them protect the accuracy and trustworthiness of the scholarly record. Before joining KGL, Duncan built a 28-year career in academic publishing, most recently serving as Director, Editorial Strategy and Publishing Policy at Wolters Kluwer Health.
