The Society for Scholarly Publishing President’s Letter highlights scholarly publishing news from the last quarter, resources you might have missed, and reflects on progress toward our community’s strategic goals.
Here in the Northeast, it seems like we went from summer into winter overnight, which is disappointing if you like to enjoy the change of the seasons. Thoughts are turning to holiday activities, preparing for the end of the year, and 2025 travel planning.
I was excited to kick off SSP’s second annual 2024 Journals Academy session in November; I think the second cohort is highly engaged, and the instructors are top-notch. I saw so many new names and organizations represented. I’m excited to see how the rest of the sessions turn out. If you are in an early career, have changed (or are contemplating a change in) departments, or have early career staff, please consider sending them to a future Journals Academy.
Recently, SSP announced the EPIC Awards (Excellence in Publishing, Information Technology, and Communications). Unlike SSP’s existing awards, these are not for specific people; they highlight groundbreaking achievements across various categories, including publications, marketing, media, tools and products, and impactful social initiatives. They honor the dedication and innovation driving our industry forward. I can’t wait to see what initiatives are recognized when we gather in Baltimore in 2025! You can create a submission or apply to become a judge today!
I am also excited to learn that the SSP Originals Auction is back! Original creations by SSP members will be available for bids when we gather in Baltimore. I was lucky to win something I bid upon earlier this year, but it was a nail-biter! All proceeds benefit the SSP Generations Fund. Consider getting crafty for a good cause!
Speaking of the Generations Fund, we are 85% of our goal. If you haven’t already signed up, the final Games for Good Trivia Battle is happening this Friday, December 6! Join your colleagues for some fun and consider doing a “bit of good” by donating $35 or more to benefit the fund when you register. You’ll also see messages in your inbox later this month requesting help from us to finish the fund! Any gift, no matter the size, is appreciated.
As always, take care of each other–and yourself–as we prepare to close out 2024. The change of the seasons brings early darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, and colder weather may dampen the spirits of some (but raise the spirits of others). Although a lot is going on, be mindful that there are those facing significant challenges that might make festive times difficult to bear. Here at SSP, our virtual doors are always open. Don’t think twice about reaching out if you need to chat.
